About

Steven Nichols is a  trumpeter, composer/arranger, and educator based in London. After recently graduating with first-class honors from the Royal Academy of Music, Steven was fortunate to sign with Ubuntu Music—an amazing opportunity to release his debut album as work with this renowned label.

Throughout his studies, Steven had the privilege of performing with renowned jazz musicians, including Chris Potter, Dave Holland, Will Vinson, Norma Winstone, and Evan Parker. He also benefitted from the mentorship of UK jazz greats such as Steve Fishwick, Stan Sulzmann, Mike Lovatt, Gareth Lockrane, Iain Ballamy, and Nick Smart.

Steven leads his own quintet, presenting original compositions alongside music by saxophonist Charlie Rees and other influential artists. The quintet has toured across the UK, performing in cities like London, Cambridge, Southend-on-Sea, and at the Broadway Arts Festival. In addition to his quintet, Steven frequently performs at many of London’s top jazz venues as a guest artist, and he’s also a member of Rev21, a jazz-gospel fusion band that explores the intersection of jazz improvisation and gospel music. His influences include Clifford Brown, John Taylor, and Percy Pursglove.

Steven’s musical journey began at the Junior Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, where he studied jazz and classical trumpet under Percy Pursglove, Mike Williams, and Lluis Mather. He served as principal trumpet for both the wind and symphony orchestras, performing at venues like the Royal Albert Hall and Birmingham Symphony Hall. His education continued at Chetham’s School of Music, where he studied jazz with Iain Dixon and Steve Berry, and performed at notable venues such as Bridgewater Hall and Band on the Wall.

Steven’s debut album, 'From Dust', recorded with his quintet, was released on June 21, 2024. This album marks an exciting milestone in his musical journey.
